Together, our facility is able to render a complete and high quality service from the eyelids, front part of the eye, all the way to the retina at the back.

OUR STORY

Our story began in 2022 when Dr Botes and Dr Vos opened the doors of our first practice at the Stirling Healthcare Centre. Driven by a passion for excellence in ophthalmology and a vision to improve the lives of our patients, we started with a small team dedicated to providing exceptional eye care in a compassionate and professional environment.

Over the years, our practice has expanded to serve patients across the Free State, welcoming Dr Callaway and Dr Kamffer who share our values and commitment to quality care. Through continual investment in advanced technologies and innovative treatments, we have grown into a trusted name in eye health.

Today, our new, dream practice is officially open at Emoya Estate, and we are proud to offer a comprehensive range of services, ensuring that every patient receives the specialised attention they deserve while honoring the vision that began our journey.

Dr Dawie Botes

Dr Botes grew up in Welkom and moved to Bethlehem where he matriculated from Witteberg High School. He obtained his medical degree from the University of the Free State, whereafter he spent his internship and community service in the Eastern Free State. It was here that he fell in love with the discipline of ophthalmology. He spent two years working in the Eye Clinic of Dihlabeng Regional Hospital under the guidance of Dr Corne Gouws and later obtained his specialist degree under Prof Wayne Marais at the University of the Free State.

He recently completed a laser eye surgery course through the London Vision Clinic in the United Kingdom, hosted by Prof Dan Reinstein.

Rural communities and the Free State in general lie close to his heart and he has been involved in numerous eye surgery campaigns in underprivileged areas through the country. In his free time he loves spending time of the farm with his family. he is also an avid violinist, cellist and pianist.

Dr Shannon Callaway

Dr. Shannon Callaway grew up in the Eastern Free State in Ladybrand and completed her schooling in Bloemfontein. She earned her medical degree from the University of Cape Town and completed her internship and community service in Bethlehem.

Dr. Callaway then embarked on a unique journey, traveling the world as a medical doctor on a cruise ship. She then returned to specialise in ophthalmology at the University of the Free State under Prof. Wayne Marais, earning her Master's degree in medicine, and passing her Fellowship exams with cum laude honours.

Dr. Callaway has a special interest in cataract and refractive surgery, oculoplastic procedures, glaucoma, and pediatric ophthalmology. Her patient-focused approach, combined with her extensive expertise, allows her to offer the highest standard of care to each individual she treats.

Dr Gerhard Kamffer

Dr Gerhard Kamffer grew up in Polokwane and matriculated from Capricorn High School. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Pretoria, completed his internship at 1 Military Hospital, and fulfilled his community service in Modimolle. After three years working as a medical officer in the Tshwane District Hospital Eye Clinic, he returned to his place of birth, Bloemfontein, to complete his Fellowship and Master’s examinations.. He currently serves as a consultant ophthalmologist at Universitas Academic Hospital, where he remains actively involved in both patient care and academic training.

Dr Kamffer has a special interest in complex cataract surgery and vitreoretinal surgery. He has completed several local and international vitreoretinal courses, ensuring that his patients benefit from up-to-date techniques and evidence-based care. Known for his calm and approachable manner, he believes in taking the time to explain conditions and treatment options clearly, helping patients feel informed and confident in their care.

Outside of ophthalmology, Dr Kamffer enjoys spending quality time with his family and visiting South Africa’s beautiful nature reserves — a reflection of his appreciation for clarity, perspective, and the simple joy of seeing the world well.
